SERENDIPITY · PROXIMITY · PRIVACY
Message at Sea creates chance encounters between strangers through real-world places and objects.
You don't know who's on the other side. And they don't know who you are.
THE IDEA
A bottle, a book, a coffee, a product, a place. Someone leaves an invite in the real world. Someone else finds it by chance. If both want to, they meet online in a private space.
Write an invite or a question and generate a unique QR code to place in a real-world context.
A person walks by, notices it and decides whether to open it. You don't know who it will be.
The first contact happens safely: no phone numbers or social profiles shared automatically.
If a connection sparks, you two decide whether to keep talking, meet in person, or say goodbye there.
A POSSIBLE STORY
LEAVE AN INVITE
No grand gestures needed. Sometimes a sentence left inside a book is enough to spark curiosity: “Shall we talk about this book?”.
SOMEONE FINDS IT
A book, a QR code and a simple idea: whoever passes by notices it, scans it and discovers there's a real person behind it.
THE FIRST MEETING
The first moment is simple and light: two strangers, the same privacy, a temporary room and the time to understand whether there's really something to say.
IF IT GOES WELL
Message at Sea doesn't promise stories. It creates occasions. If the meeting works, everything else happens off the platform, naturally.
SAFETY
You don't know who they are and they don't know who you are — at least until you both choose otherwise.
Once someone accepts the meeting, that message cannot be used by anyone else.
No phone number, email or social profile is ever shared automatically by the platform.
If you don't feel comfortable, you can end, block or report at any time.
HOW IT WORKS
Generate a QR code on Message at Sea, write your invite and print it. You can leave it on an object or in a place that gives the conversation a meaning. Whoever finds it scans the QR, reads the message and can choose to meet you online. Once the invite is accepted, the QR is no longer available to anyone else.
Create a single-use QR code on Message at Sea and write the message you want to leave.
Print it and place it, where allowed, on an object or in a place consistent with your invite.
A stranger scans it and freely decides whether to accept the conversation.
The first meeting happens online, with no automatic exchange of your personal details.
SOME IDEAS
“Shall we have an aperitivo online together?”
You chose the same bottle. That's already something to start from.“Shall we have a beer online?”
A long-distance toast with someone who goes to the same place.“Fancy discussing it together?”
Whoever finds the message has probably already read, or is about to read, something you cared about.“Ten-minute coffee chat?”
A random break can become a conversation you hadn't planned.“How do you cook it?”
A simple, concrete question is often the most natural way to start talking.“Do you have a dog too?”
One small thing in common can be enough to meet someone new.QR codes and other physical materials may only be placed where allowed by the owner or manager of the space.
